Let’s take a rather trivial example: your spouse turns on the lights in every room they pass through, but never turns them off.
This makes you BATSHIT CRAZY, because all you ever do is turn off lights!
If you were able to apply mindfulness to the situation, you might observe:
The reason you feel compelled to turn off the lights is because your parents were always after you to not leave the lights on.
The amount of electricity used by the lights your spouse leaves on amounts to pennies a day.
Your spouse isn’t even aware they leave the lights on, much less how crazy it makes you that they do so.
Once you become aware of your spouse’s behavior and your reaction to it, you’re able to see the options you both have:
You can tell your spouse how much it bothers you when the lights are left on.
You can make yourself aware that being so upset by the situation isn’t productive and may be trivial in the big scheme of things.
It also opens the door to explore what other beliefs were implanted in you by your parents and whether they help or hinder you today.
It will help your spouse feel comfortable discussing the things you do that bother them.
And the list goes on and on.
Is this a trivial example?
If it really bothers you that they leave the lights on, is it trivial to live with it for the rest of your lives together?
And what about habits that aren’t trivial at all?
Like, if your spouse tends to drive when they’ve had a little too much to drink.
Or, if your spouse enjoys ogling people of the opposite sex when you’re together in public.
Or, if your spouse flirts at parties.
